This is perlite. Which just is what it is, really. So I'm really not sure how the over £20 is justifiable. It's fine quality, it's not full of dust or anything. But I've never seem a bag that is. It all seems the same really. The seal on this bag is no good for the quantity of the bag. It pops open easily, and mine arrived loose all over the place in the box and my other items. Entirely the fault of the loose seal on the pouch.

I got the big 10L bag of perlite, and it's a really good-sized, big bag, with enough perlite to really aerate my container garden nicely. The perlite pieces are small - mostly under 5mm big and there is some dust/ powder in there too, though mostly it's the small, irregular 5mm sized pieces. If you're sensitive to dust, you may want to wear a mask when pouring this out.I like to use perlite in my containers to lighten up the soil and improve aeration and drainage. It helps prevent overwatering, or excess water in the event of rainy weather, and helps prevent problems like root rot. I particularly like using this for my green beans / climbing pole beans that are very sensitive to overwatering and get falling yellow leaves if they get too wet. Perlite should be safe for food crops as it has a reputation of being non-toxic, pH neutral and it is thought to be generally free of contaminants or pathogens. It's also great for houseplants if you have a bad habit of overwatering like I do! At least with the help of perlite, it off-sets the problem a little. You could potentially use this to lighten up clay soil in the garden, though perlite is more commonly used in pots and containers I believe. What's nice about the white pieces is that you can see them amidst the brown soil so you can make sure they're evenly mixed and well-distributed with ease.

This is a decent quality perlite that comes in a resealable bag. Like others mine arrived with the bag not fully sealed so go careful when opening the box. At £23.99 this is ok value for money and if you can use it it is certainly better value for money to buy in the bigger pack. The pieces are fairly consistent in size and there is not much dust which is good. I use perlite for mixing into soil to improve drainage for both houseplants and container plants in gardening and this bag should go a fairly long way. It is also very good for succulents and if you are trying for some hardy sempervivums outdoors then this would be good to mix in heavily.

I was disappointed with the performance of the (rather expensive) specialist seed-raising compost I bought last spring, which seemed to do my seedlings few if any favours; so this year I thought I would try a different approach in starting the veg for my allotment. I had heard that a light, well draining seed-sowing medium could be made with standard, good-quality potting compost and perlite. The perlite is meant to give the mix lightness and structure, keeping it free-draining and ensuring that the compost does not compact into a solid mass when watered. So far it seems to be working; the mix (one-third perlite, two-thirds sieved commercial compost) is light and has remained soft and loose after seed-sowing and watering. This big bag of perlite is good value, given that I am using it in a mix it will go quite a long way. It's too early in the growing season to make any judgements about the long-term effectiveness of the product, but so far it is performing as hoped.

I’ve already started to make use of this 10L bag of perlite, my first year of using it.The bag is really light which helps to move it around the greenhouse and the pieces are all of a similar size which has made it much easier to mix in with my soil. I’m using it to pot on in my greenhouse, to improve drainage and hopefully help me to produce healthier plants. This year, I’ve also begun a hydroponic garden and I understand perlite is beneficial for this too.I’ve taken advice from those far more experienced than I on quantities to use and how it use it - I had no idea perlite was so versatile, so I’m expecting great things in my gardening efforts this year. . .
