It just works, no problem, sharpens everything I have, kitchen knives, scissors, craft blades. No rocket science here, just move the blade in a shaving motion, no oil required.Replaced a much used oil stone knife sharpener which I mislaid ages ago (sigh).

A few weeks ago I saw one of my favorite knives had a few divits of the steel taken out of the sharp (or not so sharp now) edge of it. You could see where it had really had a good few knocks. I tried to use one of those smaller knife sharpening tools to no avail, tried using the bottom of a mug (thanks 5 min crafts) but it really didnt work.I knew what a whetstone was before seeing this and knew I could do with having one. When I saw this it was a no brainer to order and test so you dont have to.Well, it is almost perfect. There are numbers indicating which side is more rough and thus where to start and end. There is a block to stop it slipping as you work - could do with a bit of love there but adequate. After a good chunk of work, and some finesse, the knife was tested on some blueberries - no downward pressure, and it sliced like a dream. It really really worked. Some points however -There are no instructions, well, not in our one. If we didnt know what to be doing with it we would have had to go looking for information. There is no piece to assist with the necessary angle of work. You need to work at a 30 degree angle to get the sharpness correct. I had no idea about this, fortunately my mate who did the work did. However, that is a bit difficult to manage. We've both seen other stones which come with a guide to help with that. Finally, the edges could do with being a little tiny bit rounded. They are very square and therefore if you slip and work incorrectly you could actually damage the blade by grinding out a chunk. Not a massive issue but something to bear in mind.Overall, I am glad we got this. There are many other knives that need some TLC. Usually i just buy new knives, this will save me a ton of money in the long run.

It is early days but it seems to do the job adequately. Grit sizes were chosen on the advice of a relative who is a genuine time-served carpenter who has worked in the trade all his life. He tells me kitchen knives do not need the coarser grits but will benefit from the very fine one if I learn to use it properly.Chrisr

This review is for the IHIGOGOFA Professional Sharpening Stones 1000 6000 Grit 2-in-1 Kitchen Knife Sharpeners Whetstone with Non-Slip Rubber Base Water Wet Stone for Sharpening Knives, One Size (1000/6000)£13.98 at the time of review.I like to have really sharp knives for using in the kitchen and have used several steels over the years to keep them that way.I have also used whetstones that needed to be oiled to sharpen knives and they work well but are much slower than a steel and more messy, so I was intrigued to try this one which uses water instead of oil.I have a couple of knives that I simply can’t get a sharp edge on, no matter how many times I have tried or which tools I have tried (short of grinding stones).I tried the 6000 side first, after soaking the whetstone in water for 15 minutes, and the blade started to get sharper, but not enough to satisfy me. It already had an edge from my previous attempts but it was never sharp enough for fine cuts.I then tried the 1000 side and wow, what a difference. Within about 10 strokes on each side, the edge became sharp enough that I could really feel the difference. I polished it off with the 6000 side (which are clearly marked). I did this for both knives and I am now having to warn the family about how sharp they are.I ran the whetstone under the tap and left it to dry until I wanted to use it again. This whetstone is excellent and it really did sharpen my knives so I am very pleased with it. I would have liked to have something to keep it in when finished though; I have just put it into a larger plastic zip lock bag but something a bit more robust and protective would have been a good addition. That doesn’t detract from the whetstone though, so I am happy to give it 5 stars and am more than happy to recommend it. If you like to have sharp knives, then this whetstone is just the thing you are looking for
